Hi ! My name is Sara and I am an ESL teacher from South Africa. I became an ESL teacher because of my passions: English and teaching.
My interest in English is rooted in the various accents and ‘slang’ I’d hear in my home city, Cape Town. The creativity that comes with day-to-day expression is prevalent in such diverse communities that it is no wonder I took an interest in language. Even in literature, I find that characters with different accents and varied vocabulary adds to he dimension of the story. I have always believed that there can be an aspect of art and creativity in language.
My passion for teaching can be traced back to my childhood memories where my siblings and I would play pretend and imitate students and a teacher in front of a black board with chalk pieces. When my turn approached to become the teacher, I took pride in the leadership that comes from the role but most notably, I enjoyed explaining things. Obviously at the time I would pretend to teach my siblings classic stories from our childhood books, however, my teaching skills were further utilized at school when I would help other students understand the content from English classes. My fellow peers appreciated the way I explained things because some of them spoke English as a second or even third language and I enjoyed breaking down the content to help them (and myself at times!).
Becoming an ESL teacher allows me to tap into these passions on a daily basis as I teach students from all over the world. My goal as a teacher is to help students gain confidence in English and reach their goals for school, university, career progression etc.
This blog is my way of sharing my love for English. Subscribe where you can learn something new or appreciate the language intricacies of English.
Happy reading!
